I’ve never been very comfortable with autobiographic blurbs, but for posterity and the few who might be curious I will overcome my stylistic insecurities eschewing third person for first, and be done with it.

As you may have already surmised, this is my personal weblog and as such does not have a single unifying purpose, though over the years I’ve come up with several: to keep in touch with friends and family, to collect my thoughts, to write about all the things I don’t like, to participate in internet memes, to be stereotyped and classified, and to experiment with web technology and standards.

Currently I’m living in Hamamatsu, Japan, home of Yamaha and large kite battles. I am a techmonkey both at home and at work, Jill of all trades, interested in open source, *nix, web standards, mobile networks, alternative methods of content delivery, turning the world into one large crontab, technoculture, video games, social networks, the fusion of activism and technology, and anything else that involves pulses of high and low voltage. On the non-digital side I’m interested in windmills, public transportation, fictive kin, cheap udon, beer, whiskey, hypocritical activists, winter sun, and cheesecake.

The domain name protocol7 was taken from the anime Lain. In the series, protocol 7 is the protocol that links the wired and the real worlds using not electronic devices but people themselves. The tagline “gentle indifference” is a truncated version of “I opened myself up to the gentle indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself - so like a brother, really - I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again,” a line from The Stranger by Albert Camus.
